When you start using slack,
You have two channels by default.
The "general" and "random" channel.
The "General" channel is best used for regular team communication.
"Random" is intended for anything that's not work related.
But you can also create more channels....

Slack is a team communication tool founded by Stewart Butterfield. Slack began as an internal tool used by his company Tiny Speck during the development of Glitch, a now defunct online game. Slack was launched in August, 2013, and signed up 8000 customers within 24 hours of launch.
Slack can run on most Operating systems, namely Windows, Mac OS, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS. Slack provides Web versions as well. It offers one-on-one messaging, private groups, persistent chat rooms, direct messaging and group chats organized by topic.
All content inside Slack is searchable from a single search box. Slack integrates with a number of third-party services, including Google Docs, Dropbox, Heroku, Crashlytics, GitHub and Zendesk.
